Luang Prabang is an ancient royal capital in northern Laos. It is located on an exceptional site along the Mekong and is home to an extremely rich architectural heritage comprising temples, traditional Lao houses and colonial constructions, for which it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995.
Saveuy Silavanh is Director of the Luang Prabang World Heritage Department (DPL). He explains the challenges facing the city… Preserving heritage is not just about preserving buildings, but also about seeking a balance between tourism, a source of considerable incomes and many jobs, and maintaining harmonious living conditions for all residents.

AFD has been providing grants for the work to protect the city since 1998 and is assisting DPL in its efforts to achieve this balance.
